Summer is in FUL swing Ya’ll! And for me summer always includes cocktails, pools and BBQ’s! I love the flavors of summer especially the ones here in the South. Summer means Rhubarb! And rhubarb is one of my favorite vegetables to work with. Rhubarb is magical when paired with Strawberries and its stunning the moment it hits sugar. The tart sour floral flavor is hands down one of my very favorites. In fact I’m eating a piece of toast with fresh strawberry rhubarb jam while sippin on the bourbon cocktail as I prep to head to the pool to cool off. Rhubarb is much more than muffins or pie, oh yes rhubarb pairs perfectly with cocktails! My favorite topping to cocktails is Rhubarb Bitters! Holy Delish!! Its my cocktail secret weapon. But I always make sure to make a large batch of Rhubarb simple syrup to have on hand during cocktail season, I mean summer! Try making a batch of Rhubarb Simple Syrup and add it to your sweet tea, hot tea, cocktails and more! Its fantastic!
But now that I’m finished with my ode to Rhubarb, lets talk cocktails! Well, some very sweet people at BenShoot reached out to me and I was introduced to cocktails glasses with the most amaze-ball edge to them, bullets and broad heads! Yes each piece of BenShot has a bullet or broad head in the glass that looks like a bullet stopped in time! Its truly stunning just take a look!
Okay okay, back to the cocktails. For this summer smash hit cocktail I choose one of my favorite Bourbons, Drop Tine 12 Point Bourbon Whiskey! Fellow hunters this is just what you need to be sippin’on till hunting season…okay and after hunting season too!
So here is the recipe for my Rhubarb Bourbon Sour based off of one of my favorite cocktails the Pisco Sour!
Rhubarb Bourbon Sour
2 oz. Bourbon, I prefer Droptine 12 point Bourbon Whiskey
¾oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
1 oz. Rhubarb Simple Syrup
1 Egg White
1 Dash of Rhubarb Bitters
In a shaker cup add a bit of ice cubes. Then add all the ingredients together and shake till well chilled and mixed. Strain and serve!
Rhubarb Simple Syrup
1 Cup Rhubarb Chopped
1 Cup Water
1 Cup Sugar
In a sauce pot, add all the ingredients together. Place the pot on medium heat and bring to a boil. Stirring about 3-4 times till it reaches boiling point. Once all the sugar is dissolved, drop the heat to low and slowly simmer for about 3-4 minutes. Remove the pot from to heat and let the syrup come to room temperature. Once the syrup is at room temperature strain the rhubarb out. And reserve and save the beautiful pink syrup in a glass mason jar. Simple syrup can keep for about 1-2 months in the refrigerator.
